National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who exemplify the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Saint Michael the Archangel’s NHS chapter was chartered in January 2012 and continues to honor students who model these values both in and out of the classroom.
NHS is more than an honor roll—it is a commitment. Members are expected to uphold the highest standards of academic achievement, integrity, service, and leadership.
Selection Process
- Eligibility: Students who meet the minimum GPA requirement (determined by the NHS faculty advisers) are invited to apply in September.
- Application: Eligible students complete an application highlighting their service, leadership, and character.
- Review: Applications are reviewed by the Faculty Council, using input from academic, attendance, and disciplinary records.
- Selection: Candidates are notified of their selection in October.
- Induction: The formal induction ceremony is held in late October or early November.
Membership Standards
Scholarship
Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA as set by the NHS advisers. Members who fall below the requirement are placed on probation. If the GPA is not restored by the following semester, the student may face dismissal from NHS.
Service
NHS members demonstrate a commitment to others through voluntary contributions to the school or community. Members are required to complete 10 service hours per semester, according to their pre-approved service contract.
Leadership
Student leaders are resourceful, dependable, and positive contributors. Leadership may be shown through school or community involvement, problem-solving, or by encouraging and inspiring others.
Character
Students of character uphold principles of morality and ethics; demonstrate honesty, respect, courtesy, and responsibility; and maintain a lifestyle that reflects these values.
