Guidance Progam
The guidance program at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic High School exists to support our students in two primary areas: first, as they make their journey through high school into adulthood; and second, as they transition from high school to post-secondary education or the workforce. Our focus is on maximizing students’ intellect as well as their
spiritual, physical, and emotional capabilities, ultimately preparing them to become productive members of society.
A core component of the SMHS counseling program focuses on assisting students with the exploration, research, and selection of post-secondary educational opportunities at two- and four-year colleges and universities or with career development, for those who choose not to pursue a college education immediately after high school. In all cases, the administration and faculty who comprise the guidance team take an active role in this process.
College Guidance Timeline
Beginning in the students’ freshman year, the Head of Guidance holds periodic meetings and/or career events to address how students can best prepare themselves for the future as well as the various options available to them upon their graduation from Saint Michael. During the students’ junior and senior years, the Head of Guidance takes an even more active role, meeting individually with students to lead them through the college application process. Additionally, the guidance department works with all students to prepare them for standardized testing (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, ACT) and to map out college and/or career options.
Finally, the guidance department encourages all students to use the College Board testing prep for personalized feedback, standardized test practice, and college planning based on student PSAT/NMSQT results. Saint Michael’s hosts PSAT testing annually to monitor student achievement in 9th – 11th grade.
Students forgoing college after graduation may also choose careers in the armed forces; this includes enlistment in the US Army, US Air Force, and the US Marine Corps.
Prepared for the Future
Our graduates will be able to think clearly and rationally to successfully navigate society and to form judgments through logic.
Our graduates will have the courage to defend the defenseless, speak thoughtfully about their faith, and fight for the culture of life.
Our graduates will serve as examples of faith through both their actions and words, and they will live their lives, cross barriers, and celebrate their successes all while honoring Jesus Christ.
Our graduates will be prepared to enter college, the military, or the workforce.
